Analysis of Music Websites

From this task, I have gained some ideas about how I want my website to look and I am very intrigued with the idea of having the customisable backgrounds so that it makes the website more intuitive. I also believe that my website should only include 3 colours at a maximum. This will obviously depend on the logo but too many colours and the website just looks like a mess. From these examples, I have learnt that it is almost essential to have the latest news about the band on the front page and the first thing that the viewer will see.

Lip Sync

From this task, I have learnt that unless a music video is acted out with a story and narrative, lip syncing is key to the video because it links the visuals to the sound. If the lip syncing is just half a second out of time, the video looks fake and disconnected from the song.
   The reason why we have been asked to do this is to demonstrate that we can lip sync and that we understand what lip syncing is. This is key to our music video that we will be creating towards the end of the course.
   I believe that i managed to accentuate the mouthing of the words well and I managed to line up the song perfectly to my lip syncing in the editing.
   If I could change anything about the lip sync is that I would look at the camera. I don't need to look at the camera all the time, but I should do for some of the song. Another aspect of the video that I would change is to not look over my left shoulder because it meant that the viewers couldn't see my lips for a couple of seconds. This disconnects me from the song slightly.
   To people doing their own lip sync video, I would say that they should choose a song they like and one that is a reasonable pace: too fast and its hard to keep up with the lyrics, too slow and their performance will be static. I think my song choice was a good example for a song to do because it wasn't too fast but it was fast enough to move to the beat.




After filming and editing the first attempt, we decided to film another lip sync of a different song and for there to be more variety of camera angles and shots used instead of just the one. This improved the video dramatically because it enhanced the viewing experience and made it more interesting to watch. Also, by having parts of the video be performance based, it makes the video more varied in what the viewer is watching.

I have learnt that our music video needs:
 - Lots of cuts (makes it more interesting and engaging)
 - Cuts both on and off the beat
 - A good blend between singing performance and dancing performance

Videos That Have Changed Music Videos

Below are two music videos that I think have changed how other pieces of music are presented in the form of videos.







Both use a variety of camera angles and fast paced editing on the beat of the music. The clothing and make-up suits the genres that these songs are based in. Michael Jackson, in particular, has a very distinct look as he was the one who made the outfit that he wears popular when he was made famous. These music videos only use the sound from the song, they don't have any additional sounds from the narrative or performance part of the video.

The Most Popular Way of Viewing Music Videos

The most popular way of viewing music videos is through YouTube as it is the easiest to use and upload to. Even Vevo believes that YouTube is more popular than their website because Vevo have many YouTube channels, one for each popular band or artist. Before YouTube and Vevo, however, I believe that the way that music videos were watched were through TV, either through the programme; Top of the Pops or through the TV channel; MTV. This just demonstrates how many people consume the media through the internet now rather than through TV.


I believe that, for my music video to be successful, I need to include the following points:
 - A Narrative of some sort
 - Cutting backwards and forwards between the narrative and the band/artist playing the song
 - A unique idea/concept
 - It is easier to do a medium-paced song rather than doing a slow or fast song
